Google App Engine Download: – Is this the next Google App that will change the way programmes are created and make programming more accessible to a wider audience?

Well, we’ll have to wait and see, but it’s an intriguing concept. Google App Engine enables you to create web applications on the same massive scale as the rest of Google’s services. It’s essentially a fully integrated application environment aimed at businesses looking to reach millions of people in the same way that Google products like Google Apps and Google Reader have. This is a Google App Engine Preview Release.

Account registrations are now restricted to the first 10,000 developers, and applications are confined to the free account restrictions. On the plus side, getting started is completely free (as with all good Google products), and you’ll get 500MB of free storage and enough processing capacity to handle 5 million monthly page hits. To get your app up and running, you’ll obviously need programming knowledge, and you’ll also need to be speedy, as testing is limited to the first 10,000 users.

This is an ambitious attempt by Google to take a more committed move towards Web 2.0 than Google Gears, but whether it can deliver on its potential remains to be seen.
